Among the rarities there are encolpions – folding crosses intended for keeping parts of relics of saints. Weapons, signs of military honour, and portraits of Ukrainian Hetmans painted in the 18th century tell about the heroic history of Ukrainian Cossacks. The collection of Lviv Mint’s coins is represented by exhibits belonging to the 14th-17th centuries.
Books exhibited in the museum, including those printed by first Ukrainian printer Ivan Fedorov, testify to the richness and originality of Lviv’s culture. Some of the most prominent paintings in the world can also be found here, including a collection of coffin portraits which is exceptionally valuable both from the historical and artistic standpoint.
Jewellery of many European countries is represented by highly artistic items of both secular and religious purpose adorned with precious stones. The signet ring made by a German craftsman in the 17th century is especially impressive in its originality; it was used by magicians to communicate with the other world. Historical valuables (furniture, paintings, and clocks) emphasize the architectural exquisiteness of the Royal Halls’ interior.
Five thousand exhibits of cold arms and firearms from over thirty countries can be viewed in the Arsenal Museum at 5 Pidvalna St, which also houses an exhibition and sale of religious-purpose items. It is the only museum of this kind in Ukraine.
